How Sanoma Brings Multiple Hockey Games into One Live Broadcast
Sanoma Media Finland is one of Finland’s leading media companies, with a portfolio of well-known news, entertainment, and audio brands.
In September 2025, Sanoma launched IS-Kiekkokierros, a live ice hockey program that brings together commentary and updates from multiple games in the Finnish ice hockey league. The program airs on radio and is also available through digital streaming platforms.
To produce the live sports broadcasts, Sanoma uses Jutel’s RadioMan® radio automation system in the studio and RadioMan® Lamppu mobile contribution app to connect commentators from different hockey arenas. The studio coordinates the coverage, manages audio levels, and switches between games as the action unfolds.
CHALLENGE
Coordinating Live Coverage Across Multiple Arenas
Producing a live radio program covering several ice hockey games simultaneously requires close coordination between the studio and commentators at different arenas.
With multiple games happening at once, the studio needs to follow the action and decide which game to feature as the matches progress. As the situation changes, the studio must be able to switch quickly between commentators while keeping the broadcast running smoothly.
Clear communication between the studio and commentators is essential, especially when switching between games. Commentators also need to stay focused on the action without having to manage the technical side of the broadcast.
SOLUTION
Centralized Broadcast Control with RadioMan and Lamppu
Sanoma uses RadioMan in the studio and Lamppu to connect commentators from different hockey arenas, bringing their audio into the same broadcast system.
Through Lamppu, commentators can listen to the live broadcast, including studio segments and commentary from other arenas, and communicate off-air with the studio using two-way talkback. The studio can also use talkback to cue commentators when to wrap up their coverage and coordinate handovers between arenas.
The studio manages the broadcast through RadioMan, controlling which commentator is heard on air at any given moment. Connections from different arenas can be managed alongside other program content within the same interface. Using RadioMan’s audio faders, the studio can bring commentators on air and switch between arenas while all commentators remain connected through Lamppu.
RESULT
Streamlined Production Across Multiple Arenas
With RadioMan and Lamppu, Sanoma has been able to keep the technical setup and operational requirements of IS-Kiekkokierros to a minimum without compromising quality.
Managing connections from multiple hockey arenas alongside other program content within a single interface simplifies the studio workflow. It reduces the need for the studio operator to switch between different systems, making it easier to manage several simultaneous connections.
We've worked closely with Jutel to further develop our production setup. They've been responsive to our feedback and development needs, helping us continuously improve the way we produce IS-Kiekkokierros.
