Challenge
CBS News needed to rapidly transition newsroom operations to remote production during the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining uninterrupted live broadcasts
Solution
Jutel deployed a cloud-based RadioMan workflow supporting remote contribution, browser-based operation, and centralized production and broadcast management
Result
CBS News was able to continue daily newscast production remotely with fast deployment, reliable production workflows, and location-independent operations
How CBS News Enabled Remote Broadcasting During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Spring 2020 forced broadcasters worldwide totransition critical newsroom workflows to remote production. CBS News needed a reliable way to continue producing and delivering daily newscasts while teams worked from multiple locations.
Jutel worked closely with CBS News Radio to deploy a cloud-based RadioMan® workflow that enabled remote contribution, centralized production, and uninterrupted broadcast operations.
Within weeks, CBS News transitioned essential workflows remotely while maintaining reliable on-air delivery.

Transitioning to Remote News Production
During implementation, members of both the CBS and Jutel teams worked remotely from multiple locations.
Working closely with the CBS News engineering team, Jutel focused on optimizing workflows and enabling cloud-based newsroom operations.
News anchoring and production workflows were connected through a cloud-based RadioMan environment hosted on AWS, enabling synchronized broadcast timing and reliable audio delivery across distributed teams.
Final distribution was streamed directly to the delivery point for satellite distribution to listeners.

A New Operational Model for Distributed News Production
Within weeks, Jutel established a new operational model for remote newscast production across multiple locations.
The deployment included remote home studio environments for anchors, optimized internet connectivity, audio devices, microphones, browser-based workflows, synchronized timing, and reliable playout indicators.
The resulting workflow enabled CBS News to support location-independent broadcasting with the reliability required for daily live operations.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to help one of our longest-standing customers maintain reliable broadcast operations during exceptionally challenging circumstances,” Lukkarinen said.
Outcome
The CBS News deployment demonstrated how cloud-based broadcast workflows can support rapid operational transitions during critical situations.
By enabling remote contribution, centralized production, and distributed newsroom operations, Jutel helped CBS News maintain uninterrupted broadcasting during a highly demanding period.
